A multiculture classroom, presents teachers with daily challenges. Most classrooms in today's society are made up of students from different race, culture, social and economic background. Students are not the only factors in a diverse classroom, parents play a significant role as well. Because of the importance of home environment to classroom learning, teachers must develop a line of communication, not once a year but throughout the school year.
A stable economic foundation can provide some students with advantages that others my not have. An example, maybe a student who has had the opportunity to visit a zoo to see a lion or a bear as compare to a student who has not, or to the Vicksburg Natioanl Park, to view the monuments and history of the Civil War. These students will be able to relate more, based on hands on experience, or prior knowledge. There are times when environment will become a factor in a diverse classroom. For example, there are homes where some parents have not finished high school and there are homes where parents have finished high school, college or professional school. In this case, parents view education differently. Language can be a factor, because not all students speak English. Due to the influx of Latinos, schools are turning to making Spanish a second language, and have begun to hire teachers that are fluent in both languages. Socilization also influences diversity. Recognizing the importance of social interaction has strongly influenced education.
In the Natchez Adams school district the racial composition of students are 85% black and 15% white in public schools. Latinos are a small minority, yet the need to make Spanish a second language is forth coming. The teacher ratio is 75% white and 25% black.
During my tenure at Robert Lewis Middle School all classes on the Nissan Team were mixed. In all classes blacks were the majority. The white teachers were the majority in school personnel. There are three principals, one white female, and two black males.
The extracurricular activities, such as the band, choir, and sports team were mixed. Ironically the drum major chosen for the school's band was white. There were no white cheerleaders, or majorettes. The band director sometimes let the students make the music selection, so the type of music chosen was different . Due to the racial composition, they always had two types of music, one of which Country and Hard Rock for the whites, and Rap, R&B for the black students, and this method seemed to work.
As a atudent teacher, I found myself able to relate to the black students better than the white. In preparing my lesson plans I had to find experiences that I could relate to both types of students. An example, is when we talked about going to the museum, I related my experience of the Grand Ole Opry In Nashville Tennessee, which talked about the Country & Western culture. In talking about the Smith Robertson Museum in Jackson Mississippi, which focused on black heritage and culture , I was able to relate because it foucused on black culture, and I could easily identify with.
At Morgantown school, my co-op class was mixed, there were a total of nineteen students, of which four were white. One day we were working on past tense verbs, and the students were not grasping it, because I so desperately wanted them to learn it, I made up a song in the Rap style, and began to dance to the tune. The students got all excited joined in, the white students joined as well, and pretty soon we all were learning about the verbs. The next day one of the white students told me they wanted to try I"m a Rhinestone Cowboy. I did my best, we all got involved and had fun. On test day I found all of them humming and rocking to the tune, and everyone passed their test. The teacher liked the idea and decided to use it, in fact three other teachers on second grade hall wanted me to try it on their class.
Multiculture diversity will be a significant factor in public education. As administrators, teachers and future teachers lead the charge for a quality education, we must become familiar with all cultures. Because culture differences exist, there is no need to assume there will be behavior and learning disabilities.
"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. I believed that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word"
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
